If reports are to believed, Micromax could be one of the first Indian companies to launch a Windows Phone 8.1-based smartphones in the country.
One of the most important announcements made at Microsoft's Build Conference 2014 was the tie up of Microsoft with the Indian smartphone maker Micromax. According to reports, Micromax will soon be offering affordable Windows Phone 8.1 platform-based smartphones in India.At Build 2014, Microsoft announced making its Windows free for devices less than 9-inch display as well.
By making the OS free, Microsoft is expecting to boost its share of Windows Phone OS, which is competing against Android and iOS. Micromax is one of the biggest smartphone companies in India and has an approximate market of 16 per cent (as on Q4 2013). The company has established a strong base in entry-level and mid-range segments with devices such as Canvas HD, A35 Bolt and A67.
The new Windows Phone 8.1 update brings a slew of interesting features such as Cortana, also touted as Microsoft's answer to Siri. The update will include a new notification centre, Internet Explorer 11, better security and enterprise features, a greater focus on app discovery and a better calendar.
