Sony has released the official PlayStation app for Android and iOS platforms ahead of PS4's launch in the US and Canada later this week.

The app lets users chat with their friends; receive notifications, game alerts, and invitations, and also use the mobile device as an on-screen keyboard for the PlayStation 4. The app also lets users see what their friends are playing, compare trophies, and view their own profile or recent activity.

The app also lets users browse PlayStation Store on the move, letting them select games and add-ons while away from the console and then push them to their PS4, so they are ready when they get home. The app also offers second-screen capabilities, to provide greater challenges and control in games which utilise these capabilities.

Finally, the app also doubles up as a support centre, offering quick access to PlayStation system guides, manuals, and the PlayStation Blog, for the latest news and tips.

Sony's PlayStation 4 is scheduled to launch in US and Canada this Friday, with a date with Europe set for later this month. The PS4 will cost $399, more than rival Microsoft's Xbox One that has been priced at $499. Microsoft is expected to launch the Xbox One on November 22 in 13 countries.

While unofficial reports have indicated the PlayStation 4 is expected to hit Indian shores in December this year, the Xbox One is not expected to come to India or other Asian markets until 2014.

The PlayStation app by Sony is now available as a free download for Android and iOS.
